The City of Vancouver has added a new component to its Emergency Response, the Disaster Support Hub (DSH)
See our film of the interactive evening discussion with Cindi Barker, coordinator of the Seattle Emergency Support Hub hosted by the Dunbar Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness (DEEP) group and Village Vancouver Transition Society Monday October 24, 2016: Click HERE
The City of Vancouver has added a new component to its Emergency Response, the Disaster Support Hub (DSH). The concept is modeled after similar hubs in San Francisco and Seattle. According to the City’s website, the Hubs have an important role:
“A major earthquake in Vancouver will impact everyone in our community. Families, neighbours, and community organizations will need to work together to support each other while emergency service personnel are responding to high-priority incidents.
Disaster support hubs are designated locations where you can initially gather to coordinate your efforts and offer assistance to other members of your community. They are also the post-disaster locations where City staff and trained volunteers will prioritize getting information and providing services to the public. There are 25 disaster support hubs located throughout the city.”

At present, the only activity around this new emergency preparedness piece is a sign posted outside the community centre, including the Dunbar Community Centre, and a brief overview description found on the city website. The DSH is conceived of as a wholly citizen and community responsibility.
Cindi Barker has played a key community organizing role over the last 9 years developing the emergency support hub concept in Seattle. She brings tremendous experience on how to initiate and grow community engagement around emergency preparedness, and her input could directly contribute to developing the DSH concept at the community level in Vancouver. It bears noting the value and benefit the support hub concept also has towards building stronger communities
In order to serve you better, we invite you to take our Workshop Survey. There is much we can do to prepare ourselves and our community – help us choose the focus!. Responses to the survey will give us a better idea of the information and skills you would like included in workshops and overall comments and concerns with neighbourhood preparedness. Thank you.
This website is offered as part of an ongoing emergency preparedness project inspired by residents of the Dunbar area and those from surrounding neighbourhoods of Vancouver, BC, Canada. The project has been supported by a Neighbourhood Small Grant (NSG) from Kits Neighbourhood House, and we look forward to bringing these tools into our wider communities. We appreciate the excellent emergency preparedness programs offered by the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia and the “Map Your Neighborhood” program (MYN) from Washington State
Site Navigation: Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our site and its abundant resources. On many pages you will find tabs and accordions that when clicked open with additional information. The main menu is at the top right of the page and contains sub-menus which appear when selected.
With gratitude to those who inspire our preparedness.
Neighbours preparing together!
For residents, family, friends, caregivers, shopkeepers, businesses and those who visit the Dunbar Neighbourhood of Vancouver BC
Dunbar Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness (DEEP) is a citizen’s grass roots effort to ensure our community is able to take care of ourselves after a disaster. DEEP envisions organizing and planning block-by-block, bringing neighbours together to build mutual trust and awareness of each other’s skills and special needs.
Some of the actions envisioned include building on Block Watch activities like block parties, adding in skill development, training and mutual support for undertaking basic preparation. We’ll be using the “Map your Neighbourhood” MYN program as an initial step in organizing individual blocks.
DEEP will also attend to community wide issues and resources including working with the City services and local schools and churches to identify places of refuge, provide communication links, emergency medical support, food and security until city and provincial services can be restored.
